CANDIDATES & ELECTED OFFICIALSWHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE?Candidates for elective office "file" for that office with an appropriate officer. State level (including legislative) and Congressional level candidates file with the Secretary of State. The times of filing are fixed by law. Please see Chapter 115 of the Missouri Revised Statutes (sections 305 to 405) for complete information. Unfortunately, there is no single list of qualifications for elective office in Missouri. The qualifications for each office are listed in the State Constitution or state law pertaining to that particular office It is generally true, however, that a candidate who files either with the Secretary of State or with a County Clerk must be a registered voter, hence at least 18 years of age. There are additional age and residency qualifications for each office. Candidates for County level offices may obtain further information from the appropriate county officer. In Kansas City, the "Clerk of the County Legislature" is the filing officer. Persons interested in City office, school board, or Metropolitan Junior College board membership should, as above, contact the specific Board Secretary or City Clerk for more Information. As indicated in the website section on "Petitions," the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners has material relative to Municipal (City) elective office. |
