Poll Worker Employment

Election Judges

Qualifications:

  • Must be a registered voter of Kansas CIty with Jackson County.
  • Must indicate your party (Democrat or Republican) affiliation.

Compensation:

  • Missouri: Pay will range from $25 to $125, depending on the county in which you work and the position filled. Additional compensation is paid for attending a training session.
  • There are several classes of election worker positions used in the voting locations on election day. Your pay will depend on the position assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend training session on procedures to follow at voting locations.
  • Open voting location and prepare machines for voting.
  • Supervise or manage the registration book to verify eligibility of voters.
  • Ensure the proper ballots are supplied to voters.
  • Call the election office throughout the day to check on registrations, when necessary.
  • Close the polls, ensuring that all voters who are in line at 7:00 p.m. have the opportunity to vote.
  • Prepare vote tally sheets.
  • Prepare all supplies for pick up by, or delivery to, the election office.
  • Note: Working hours begin at 5:00 a.m.

Additional Poll Worker Opportunities

  • Deputy Commissioners (DC's) serve as roving poll workers to visit poll sites throughout election day by ensuring proper voter procedures are followed, giving and receiving updates from election judges, and serving as the eyes and ears of the election board (must designate a party preference).
  • Voter Assistance Specialists (VAS's) assist voters by verifying their registration, correct polling location or other information using the Missouri Certified Voter Registration database and a laptop computer (provided by the election board).
  • Pickup Personnel (PUP's) ensure timely retrieval of ballots and voting supplies from poll sites and deliver the supplies to the election board headquarters (a 3-4 hour shift).
  • Greeters/Locators help minimize lines at the polls by ensuring the voter is at the correct poll, has the correct identification, and is in the correct line.
  • Compensation ranges from $25 to $125 depending on the position worked. Training and supplies (including laptops) are provided.
